Every parent wants to give their kids a smart start in life. When it comes to how to make that goal a reality, there are a lot of things to consider. One of the most pivotal decisions they will face is which preschool their child will attend, according to Genesee Intermediate School District’s Executive Director of the Center for Countywide Programs Tricia Hill.

“Preschool is a foundational year, because, for most kids and their families, it leaves a lasting impression. A positive experience can certainly influence the transition and success for both a child and those around them,” says Hill.

Kids develop certain ideas about school right from the start, according to Hill.

“Choosing the right preschool program is important and why we recommend parents attend the GISD Preschool Enrollment Event on Sunday, March 17 at the Flint Children’s Museum. Research shows that children who have attended a high quality preschool program are more prepared for success in school, “says Hill.

GISD is excited to get Genesee County’s youngest residents into the classroom to help jump-start their learning experience and their free event will allow families the opportunity to check out their services, and classroom programs.

The programs welcome all children, regardless family income, disability or cognitive delays. Depending on family income levels, program participation can be completely free.

The kids can explore and play in the museum free of charge, while parents discuss options with GISD staff on hand to help families decide which program might be best for their child’s needs.

“The preschool enrollment kickoff presents a wonderful opportunity for families to learn more about the programs and resources available to children in our community,” says Hill. “Studies show there are numerous benefits for children who attend high quality preschool programs. Making sure children are in the classroom early will provide a good foundation academically, and it can also help them develop good social skills, both of which they will utilize throughout their lives.”

Editor’s Note: The GISD Preschool Enrollment event will take place at the Flint Children’s Museum located at 1602 University Ave, Sunday March 17 from noon to 5 p.m. Admission is free.
