There is no question. Boots are made for walkin’ and runnin’ in Michigan winters. Without them, feet get cold and wet. Without them outside play for kids can be agony as can waiting at the bus stop or simply walking to school. Even a snowball fight can be miserable.

No matter what they are doing no child should suffer from cold feet during a long Michigan winter.

HAP is committed to helping fix that problem for as many kids in the Flint area as possible with its annual Boots for Kids Drive.

Starting Monday, Nov. 20 through Feb. 28, 2018, HAP will collect new boots to make sure local kids have the proper footwear to stay warm this winter. Look for the 12-foot tall orange boot that celebrates the start of the program. It will appear at select HAP-sponsored events.

New this year, HAP will donate $1 to the drive each time a person posts an Instagram or Facebook selfie with HAP’s big boot and tags @HAPMichigan using #HAPbootsforkids. The goal is to collect a maximum of 1,500 selfies.

Since it began in 2008, HAP’s Boots for Kids has provided new boots to thousands of children in shelters and community agencies throughout Genesee, Saginaw, Bay, Lapeer and St. Clair counties.

“We’ve worked with HAP for years to get boots for families who have very little and no place to go,” says Debra Hayes, executive director of My Brother’s Keeper, one of the local shelters that helps distribute the boots. “It’s such a blessing to have this service for our community.”

You can help make sure no child goes without warm feet this winter by donating boots or dollars. It’s a great project for businesses, area nonprofits and community organizations as well.

New boots of any size can be donated at:

If you want to send check please make it payable to “Priority Children/HAP’s Boots for Kids” and mail it to Priority Children, 902 East Sixth Street Flint, MI 48503. Priority Children, which works to improve the quality of life for children and families, acts as the fiduciary for HAP’s Boots for Kids program.

Contributions of new, warm winter boots and cash donations are put to work through trusted community organizations to make sure the help goes to those who need it most.

“We take it for granted that anyone who needs boots is able to get them,” says Tom Spring, director of wellness and community programs, HAP. “In reality, boots can be costly for the typical family, considering that most have more than one child. I’m glad  HAP can help ease that burden for families that need the most help.”

Let’s help the kids get those boots made of walkin’, runnin’ and just keeping warm. Don’t forget the selfies with the boot.
